~Conversation with a Neighbor; a Chase then Race~

The problem with keeping up with the Jones’s is, you’ve already created an idea that they are better than you, so you’ll never be satisfied; you’ll never catch up because you never give yourself approval, never accept who you are, or what you have. Then when you finally do “believe” you have caught up or surpass the Jones, you then work twice as hard to stay ahead, spending your life running from your shadow and you’ll never get that far ahead of it.

The worse part is you will become uglier in the chase and race, beginning to look down on others believing, “I’m not them; I have surpassed them”. At that time you will know that you are trapped in cyclical cage of competitiveness, and still will never be content when you realize you aren’t happy because even then, what you see in the mirror is wretched and worn from stumbling, trying, and running, judging, and comparing, constantly looking over your shoulder at those you think you’ve passed. And moreover, you will see you haven’t passed anything of real value, if anything have fallen so far behind in your own humanity.
